Lamborghini's highly anticipated Hypercar debut

Lamborghini is looking to wow the Hypercar class with the SC63 at next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans (12-16 June), and the car is well on its way thanks to an extensive testing programme and top-notch drivers.

Lamborghini's is certain to draw a lot of attention at the 92nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Italian constructor is gearing up to take on the Hypercar class with the SC63. One car is set to participate in the FIA World Endurance Championship, and another to compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Lamborghini will join forces with the Iron Lynx team to run the car and recruit drivers from both endurance and Formula 1.

Lamborghini Style

Lamborghini unveiled the SC63 at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Hypercar, based on a Ligier chassis, is the most advanced racing car ever built by the iconic marque and is equipped with a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine developed by Lamborghini engineers. You'll be able to spot the SC63 on the track immediately thanks to its classic Lamborghini style features.

The development of the car, both in simulator and on track, has benefitted from the expertise of works drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli, Daniil Kvyat (110 Grand Prix) and Romain Grosjean (179 Grand Prix). All four are confirmed to represent Lamborghini in 2024, but the division of labor between the FIA WEC and IMSA has not yet been announced. Grosjean is almost certain to return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 14 years after his sole participation to date, at the wheel of a Ford GT entered by Matech Competition in the LMGT1 class (retirement due to engine failure).

Major Testing Programme

The Lamborghini SC63 first hit the track in early August for a shakedown at the Autodromo Vallelunga in Italy. A vast testing programme was carried out thereafter at the Imola, Le Castellet and Spa-Francorchamps circuits. The Hypercar coverd nearly 4,000 km, affording the opportunity to work on various engine, gearbox, traction control and brake calibrations. Extensive aerodynamic tests were also executed by the engineers. Lamborghini is pulling out all the stops to win the top endurance racing class.

The Italian marque will rely on the vetted experience of LMP2 class veteran Iron Lynx. Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO: “We will be measuring ourselves against the very best, on the most demanding proving grounds. On one hand, this will give our successful motorsport programme even more visibility, but it will also allow us to test future technologies: our LMDh prototypes will become our most sophisticated open laboratory on four wheels."

Much like Ferrari with the 499P, Lamborghini would love nothing more than to win the Hypercar class for its first participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans will begin a new chapter in its storied history on 12-16 June 2024.
