A look back at the Centenary: racing cars wind through the Le Mans city centre

To bring the administrative and technical checks known as Scrutineering to a close, eight cars formed a spectacular parade in the streets of the city centre.

There was a time when competitors came to the circuit by road driving the car they'd entered in the race. For the Centenary last June, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest wanted to give a nod to the past by allowing eight racing cars to snake through the Le Mans city centre after Scrutineering.

The cars given the honour were Prema Racing's #63 ORECA 07-Gibson (driven by Doriane Pin), the #33 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R (driven by Ben Keating), Kessel Racing's #57 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo (driven by Takeshi Kimura), Walkenhorst Motorsport's #100 (driven by Jeff Segal), Dempsey-Proton Racing's #77 Porsche 911 RSR-19 (driven by Julien Andlaeur), GR Racing's #86 (driven by Michael Wainwright), Hendrick Motorsports' #24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (driven by Jimmie Johnson) and the authentic vintage Chenard & Walcker chassis that served in the identical reconstruction of the 1923 winner (driven by four-time Le Mans winner Yannick Dalmas).

The cars followed a route starting from Général de Gaulle avenue to Louis Blanc quay.

The passage of cars through the Wilbur Wright tunnel was one of the highlights that thrilled the crowd, particularly the #77 Porsche and the #33 Chevrolet Corvette. Will the parade be held again next year? Find out on Saturday 8 June 2024!
